A recent study, initiated by the Icelandic Museum of Natural History and conducted in collaboration with several scientific institutions, sheds entirely new light on the ancient presence of walruses in Iceland. The research confirms that a distinct Icelandic walrus population lived in the country for thousands of years before becoming extinct sometime between 800 and 1200 AD.

The exhibition presents these remarkable findings and intertwines them with discussions about walrus biology and current distribution, as well as the historical uses of walruses and their possible role during the settlement of Iceland.
